Vera L. Carter's Obituary
Vera Carter was born the fifth child to the late J.B. Glaspie and Berdie L. Glaspie on June 21, 1930 In Tatum, Texas (Rusk County).
Vera's parents raised her up in the Friendship Baptist Church in Tatum, Texas during her early years. She later accepted Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at Holy Temple Jesus Christ #1 under the pastorate of the late Roy Hurd, Bishop H. C. Manuel, Arthur Shelvin, the founder Mother A. M. Lee, and the present Pastor Overseer Charles H. Manuel. There, she served faithfully as a prayer warrior with healing hands and also served as the president of the Usher Board.
Vera attended and was a graduate of Mayflower High School in Tatum, Texas. Afterward, she and Murvie Carter, or "Souk" as only she called him, were united in Holy Matrimony. To this marriage, seven children were born; three were born in Tatum, Texas and four were born in Houston.
Vera's work experience was at Queen Laundry, Alamo Linen Service, and Rice University where she was a cook for 30 years. She was specially known for her pie baking. She sold pies at stores in her community, baked for church fundraisers, and catered at local work places.
Vera Carter departed this life on January 10, 2016. She was preceded in death by her parents, J.B. Glaspie and Berdie L. Glaspie Turner, her husband Murvie Carter, two sons Donnie Ray Carter and Charles E. Carter, two sisters Jerta Mae Frazier, and Lola B. Reece; five brothers Art Louis, Samuel, J.D., Benny Ray, and Robert Glaspie.
Vera leaves to mourn: one son Jesse B. Carter and four daughters, Christine Singleterry, Hester Brown, Loretta Williams (Floyd) and Barbara Polk; two god daughters Shirley McBride (Eddie) and Joyce Guidry; two daughter- in laws Ida Mae Carter and Ester Carter; one brother Willie L. Glaspie (Lova) Tatum, Texas; one sister Yula Rea Holmes of Tucson, Arizona; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends whom she loved very much.
Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016. Visitation will start at 9am followed by Funeral service at 10am. Both services will be held at Holy Temple of Jesus Christ #1, 8409 Hoffman St., Houston, Texas 77016 - Overseer Charles H. Manuel - Oveseer Paul W. McKinney. officiating.
Interment will take place in Friendship Memorial Gardens Cemeterey (Tatum, Texas).
