1925-2023

On July 25, 1925, a baby girl was born to the proud parents of Austin and Almee Rocio in Palmetto, Louisiana. She was given the name Lorene Rocio, and on that day her life journey began. She had three sisters born after her: Irene, Martha, and Serena. When Lorene was about five years old, Martha died at the age of three, and the same year her father passed away. She attended school for a few years in Louisiana. In 1937, at the age of twelve, she was converted at a little Baptist Church in Bolden, Louisiana. Later, she joined St. Matthew Baptist Church, and on February 11, 1941, she married Charlie Simon. Her first child was born exactly one year later on February 11, 1942, and they named him Edward. On December 25, 1942, Christmas Day, her mother passed on to Glory. Edward was 10 months old and she was 6 months pregnant. On March 6, 1943, Charles was born.

In 1944, she moved to Beaumont, Texas. While there, she obtained her first job. She worked at the Box factory on 11th Street, tying up plywood. She worked there for 6 months and moved on to a café on Port Arthur Road, and then to Shepherd Laundry on Earline Street, and finally, she found her niche at the Town Hotel off 11th Street, where she worked as a maid. In 1946, she joined Lilly of the Valley Baptist Church. In 1953, she and her family moved to Houston, Texas, and there she joined Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. She worked for five years doing private duty. In 1957, she and Charlie separated. Her divorce was finalized in 1958, and she moved to 3rd Ward for a short time. Later that year, she moved to McNair and joined Antioch Baptist Church. She met Aron Anderson, and they were married on September 16, 1959, and she moved to Barrett Station (Crosby) on Charles Street, not far from McNair. Her oldest son, Edward, married Mary Ruth, and they lived with her for a while. During that time, her first grandchild was born. She helped the midwife, Ms. Carrie, deliver the baby girl, Bernadette. She was born around 4:00 p.m. on Christmas Eve in 1960.

When Edward and his wife moved, Bernadette remained with her. Bernadette never left her home; she raised her as her own daughter. She moved to Houston in 1964, where she purchased her home on Tommye Street. She renewed her membership with Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. There, she lived happily for many, many years. Grandchildren were born and life was great. Aron was called "Pop" and she was called "Mom" by everybody; of course, the grandchildren started it. Aron bought her a new Nova and taught her how to drive it in 1971. She got a job at Hermann Hospital Nursing, doing maid work for three years. Later, she got on at Bellaire Day Nursery for four years. She left there and worked at the Jewish Home for six years. She met Ms. Brothers there, and she wanted her to work for her. She worked for her for 13 years, private duty. She got tired of driving so far, so she got jobs closer to home. She worked at Booker Daycare, in the kitchen at Silver Thread Nursing Home, and finally, she worked at Texas Home Health, taking care of the elderly. In 2000, she retired and was never fired from any job. However, before she retired, her oldest son was killed in 1987, but God brought her through it. In 1990, her wonderful husband, who she was married to for 31 years, passed on to Glory. Again, God strengthened her and brought her through. On November 9, 1995, her son Charles died of a massive heart attack. She found God's strength to endure. She had her share of life's ups and downs, but God was good to her and the downs had been few. She still can say God blessed her. There had never been a time in her life He did not bring her through.

On September 5, 2002, she married Eddie Winn; twelve years later she married again. She gained twelve wonderful stepchildren and a host of other family. She had 10 grandchildren, Bernadette, Leonard, the late Angelo, the late Maxine, Janet, Edward Jr., Michael, and Kimberly (these are Edward's children), along with Anthony and Monica (these are Charles's children). She had 23 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, Keara, the late Larry Jr., Taylor Sierra, and many more. She saw four generations of children. Thank you, Jesus. Her soul was saved and her mind was made up and she was determined to go all the way with Jesus. She has seen a little of the world too: Los Angeles and San Diego, California, Las Vegas, South Carolina, Seattle, Washington, San Antonio, Denver, Colorado, Cancun, Florida, Arkansas, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, New York, Chicago, and finally to Glory with Jesus on August 9, 2023, at 11:30 a.m., sixteen days after her 98th birthday! She outlived three husbands and one body. Her clock graciously wound down.

Services for Lorene Winn will be held on Saturday, August 19 2023 at Greater Star Missionary Baptist Church 5ths 510 Cruse Rd, Houston, Texas 77016.

A viewing will be held at 10:00 am followed by an 11:00 am Funeral.
