was born to Leroy (Roy) and Mildred Chevalier on October 21, 1947 in Houston, Texas.
Leroy Jr. received his spiritual guidance and foundation at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, where he also attended first and second grade. His family moved to Settegast community where he continued his education, graduating from B. C. Elmore High School in 1967. His great desire to improve his livelihood inspired him to enroll and graduate from Texas Southern University and continue his education at the Thurgood Marshall School of Law where he received his Juris Doctorate. Immediately after, he returned back to the North Forest community to establish his practice and positively impact his community.
As a member of the Northeast Houston Democratic Coalition, he worked diligently to further community-wellbeing and political involvement. His dedication to the community exceeded political lines. As a past President of the LBJ Council Board of the Harris County Hospital District, he strived to make hospital services more accessible to the community at large. Perhaps more telling was his work with Houston Community College (HCC). He served an instrumental role in gaining support for the North Forest district vote regarding annexation by HCC to bring higher education and job training to the community. He further used his doctorate of jurisprudence to join the team of Dr. Margaret Ford Fischer and Dr. Abe Bryant at the Northeast Campus to personally oversee campus workings.
He is preceded in death by: a loving wife, Sandra Bass Chevalier; precious, eldest daughter, Michelle Chevalier Ballard; father, Roy Chevalier; and two sisters ,Ollivette Larry and Angela Chevalier.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving mother, Mildred Chevalier; a devoted daughter, Kimberly Echols (Chris); sons: Leroy Chevalier III, and Darrell Bass; grandsons: Leroy Chevalier IV, Christopher Echols, Justice Chevalier; granddaughters: Chloe Ballard, Hannah Echols, Margot Ballard, and Lana Ballard; great-grandsons: Kenaury McFarland, Leroy Jones, and Justice Chevalier Jr.; siblings: Sylvia Green (Richard), Kevin Chevalier (Jackie), Kenneth Chevalier (Crystal), Andre Chevalier (Anna), a loyal and caring sister, Gwendolyn Frazier and brother-in-law/best friend Michael Frazier; aunts: Lulu Holden (Harold), Ola Gordon; uncle Stafford Gordon; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Celebration of Life will be held Friday, December 1, 2017. Visitation starting at 8am followed by funeral service at 10am. Family and Friends will join in Celebration at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, 4000 Sumpter St., Houston, Texas 77020 - Rodney J. Armstrong, SSJ, Celebrant.
