Joyce Lynn Lockett Walker's Obituary
Joyce Lynn Lockett Walker was the second of six siblings born to the late Johnnie and Mattie Bell Vaughn Lockett on May 20, 1941 in Kennard, Texas. At an early age Joyce was instilled with the virtues, "that with God in your life all things are possible; that education is the key to self-improvement; and that anything worth having is worth working for."
A woman of faith, Joyce was currently under the leadership of Pastor J.P. Augustine at True Vine Church of God In Christ. Through the years Joyce has been a good and faithful servant, in the various churches that she became a member, she held many different positions utilizing her God given gifts, such as church secretary, YPWW President and on various committees assisting in any capacity beneficial to the smooth running of the church.
Joyce married Herman Walker in 1959, to this union one son, Michael Ray, was born. Her beloved son preceded her in death.
She loved seeking knowledge. Her elementary education was completed at Bruce Elementary School; she graduated from Kashmere Gardens Senior High in 1959 and earned an Associate Degree from the University of Houston in 2006. While pursuing her formal education, Joyce worked at Ben Taub General Hospital for 30 years and 8 months. She held various positions that included Department Secretary; Senior Clerk; Gift Shop and Volunteer Department Coordinator.
Joyce was very civic minded. She believed that if you belonged to an organization or lived in a community you should be actively involved. This attitude resulted in many unique opportunities. She served as Executive Secretary of her local chapter of AFSCME, advocated for seniors in both Washington, D.C. and Austin, served on several grand juries. As a member of the Harris County Democratic Party, Joyce conducted Voter Registration Drives and campaigned for various candidates. Joyce loved to talk about meeting both former President Bill Clinton and the late Governor Ann Richards. After retirement, Joyce was active at both the Hobart-Taylor Community Center and Northeast Multicultural Center.
A creative person, Joyce's hobbies included sewing, arts and crafts (ceramics, jewelry making, crocheting), fishing with her cousin from Kennard, growing plants and cooking for family and friends. She liked doing things for people, especially children and older people. This is best reflected in how she treated her mother and the many children who call her God Mother. Joyce extended love not only to her immediate family, but also to members of the various families she encountered in her daily life. She would always extend words of encouragement to help them through difficult times.
Joyce was called home to be with the Lord on January 9, 2016.
Joyce will be missed dearly by her many loyal friends and her family. Her immediate family includes: three (3) brothers William (Jewel) Lockett, Augusta, GA; Carl (Lucy) Lockett, Charlotte, NC; Clarence (Gloria) Lockett, Lawrenceville, GA., two (2) sisters Betty Carter, Detroit, MI and Alice Rogers, Houston, TX., and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, God Children and friends.
Wake will be held Friday (1/15/16) from 5 to 9pm at Duncan Mortuary Chapel, 5806 N. Wayside Dr. (77028).
Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 (12 Noon) at Gospel Lighthouse Church of God In Christ, Kennard, Texas - Pastor Clarence Lockett, officiating.
Interment will take place in New Hope Cemetery (Kennard, Texas).
