Jerry Douglas Clay's Obituary
On the bright and blessed day of January 21, 1937 a bouncy baby boy was born to the proud and loving parents, Jessie Clay Sr. and Mittie Burleson Clay in Bessie Mae, Texas. They lovingly named him Jerry Douglas Clay.
He grew up in Lufkin, Texas where he received his formal education from Dunbar High School. He was a proud member of the Dunbar Tiger football team. He was a part of the class of 1954.
Jerry moved to Houston, Texas at an early age. He had great passion for singing in which led him to join George Hines and the Gospel Winds Quartet singers. He was blessed to record several albums and travel all over the country spreading the word of God through song.
He worked at M.D. Anderson as a pathologist, where he retired after thirty-six (36) years of service.
Jerry loved spending time with his family. He was very comical and full of life. There was never a dull moment in his presence.
God saw fit to unite him with the love of his life, Ms. Helen Brock Clay whom he loved dearly. They were married for twenty (20) years, enjoying and embracing life to the fullest. She stood by him diligently until God called him home.
He departed this earthly life, making his transition into eternal rest on Thursday, January 14, 2016. He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Clay Sr. and Mittie Burleson Clay.
Jerry leaves a lifetime of precious and loving memories to his devoted wife of twenty (20) years, Helen Brock Clay; sisters, Elnora Clay of Oakland, California, Sadie Hodge of Houston, Texas, Bessie Brown of Woodville, Texas; brother Jessie Clay II of Dickerson, Texas; daughters Betty J. Mitchell (Robert), Marilyn Clay, Jacqueline Garcia (Gregg), Treneka Clay Robinson; sons Michael Billingsley (Sonya), Kenneth Williams, Ronald Harris (Delores); extended family, Lynnette and Darrell Jordan, Frederick Brock, Wayne Brock, Tracie Brock, Eleanor Brock Terry; twenty (20) grandchildren; thirty-three (33) great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 23, 2016. Visitation will began at 9am followed by funeral service at 11am. Both services will be held at Mt. Corinth Baptist Church, 4901 Providence St., Houston, Texas 77020. Pastor Alan Lamar Patterson - Eulogist.
Interment will take place in Earthman Resthaven Cemetery, 13102 North Freeway, Houston, Texas 77060
