Remembering
Gussie "Joan" Gibson Roberts
1949 - 2024

On September 5, 1949, a beautiful gift of life was born unto the world.  Gussie E. Gibson, the only daughter of Holland Raymond Gibson, Sr. and Dorthy Marie Malbrue Gibson, made her entrance in Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Houston, Texas.  Gussie or better known as Joan was raised in Trinity Garden with her four brothers.  Gussie attended Kashmere Garden High School and graduated with the Class of 1967.  After high school, she furthered her education at Houston Community College, becoming an operating room technician, until her health failed.

Gussie united with Caleb L. Roberts, Jr and this union blessed them with the birth of their two sons, Caleb, III and Raymond.  Gussie loved her family and she especially loved her boys.  Gussie made her boys her number one priority.  She was the baseball mom, game commentator, team transporter, and any other thing that her boys or their teams needed.  When she was not being "Super Mom", she enjoyed cooking, playing cards with her friends and family, sewing, traveling, going to the "penny", bowling, riding motorcycles, and other hobbies and activities that would keep her busy and out of the house. Gussie was the best cook ever.  When she could no longer cook, she taught her two daughters in love, how to cook all of her favorite dishes and how to bake cakes and pies, her way.

Gussie was a kind and generous person throughout her life. She exhibited what a Christian should be; she forgave, and she suffered in silence.  Even though she was ill and confined, she was always concerned about the well-being of others.  Gussie was positive and uplifting to others' spirits with words of encouragement.  Gussie was the family historian, by keeping the memories of our ancestors alive with her stories of them from the long past. She had a way of bringing them to life again.  She never forgot them.

Celebrating in Heaven with Gussie are her parents, Holland Sr. and Dorthy Marie; three of her brothers, Herman, Howard, and Michael; and her nephew Vence "Papa".

Cherishing the life and love of Gussie are her children; Caleb, III (Shondra) and Raymond (Wynete); grandchildren, Dezavius, Malachi, Caleb, IV, and Raylen Roberts, Shelby Dillard, and Shonkendria Patterson; great-grandchildren, Isiah, Elijah, and Denver Roberts, Malonie and Morris Williams; special nieces and nephews, Yolanda "Ninnie" and Howard Jr."Baby Ray" Gibson, Portia' (Cory) Jenkins, Michael Jr. (Keisha) Gibson, Julian (Doniesha) Gibson, Heretha Gibson and Juanice (Donald) Gibson-Brown; and a host of great nieces and nephews; and two special "sisters" Gwendolyn Gibson and Wilma Gibson; and all children in the neighborhood and their families.

Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2024.  Viewing at 10 am followed by 11 am funeral services, at New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 3221 Bain St., Houston, Texas 77026.  Dr. Charles E Turner, Pastor and Pastor Toliver, Eulogist.
