Barbara Jean Turner's Obituary
Her journey began on September 3, 1942 when Leo and Octavia Countee, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and lovingly named her Barbara Jean Countee.
She received her early education through the North Forest Independent School District, graduating from B. C. Elmore High School in 1960.
Barbara decided to start her career by joining the United States Air Force in 1960. Shortly after enlisting she met and married Leroy Turner, her loving husband of 29 years. God Blessed this union with three loving daughters, Terri, Vivian and Catherine.
In December of 1965 Leroy and Barbara decided to test their entrepreneurial skills in the fast food industry. They built and operated Turner's Dairy Bar, the INFAMOUS Malt Shop, where the family worked successfully for 10 years.
Barbara decided to follow her dream in education after her daughters' transition into young ladies. She accepted a position with North Forest I.S.D while pursuing her bachelor's degree. In May of 1980, Barbara graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Education from Texas Southern University. One month later she received her Teaching Certification. Barbara loved serving her community and accepted a teachers position at Shadydale Elementary where she taught and mentored students for 25 years.
Barbara was blessed with a natural gift for giving, loving and accepting all. Any person in need was always welcome in her life and in her home.
Barbara was called home to glory on Sunday, September 27, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband Leroy in 1991, her parents Leo and Octavia Countee, two brothers Johnny and Steve, two sisters Billie Archie and Faye Countee.
She leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters Terri Foster (Dennis), Vivian Turner (Alfred), and Catherine Turner; one brother Leo Countee, Jr., one sister Ollie Butler; three grandchildren Detavius, Chris, and La Chassity; and 12 great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
Barbara's life will be celebrated on Friday, October 2, 1015, with a viewing beginning at 10:00am. The Life Celebration will follow at 11:00am. Both services will be held at, Church of The Living God Temple #28, 6431 Eastland St., Houston, Texas 77028 - Bishop Jerry T. Burly, Pastor and Evangelist Gloria Collins, Officiating.
Burial will take place in Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Dr., Houston, Texas 77038.
